I don't think a world wide malthusian nightmare is likely. The population is still growing but the food supply and total wealth have been growing faster then the population every century since the renaissance, and every decade since WWII. Also as countries develop they tend to reduce their birth rate. I could see a local population crisis in places like Bangladesh but not a world wide one.
