Zero point energy is another effect of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. One of the ways of stating that principle is that if the energy of a body is measured, and the time of that measurement is taken, the product of those two measurements must greater than Planck's Constant h. (To any physicists on board: Yeah, I know that's not exactly right. Close, though. Gimme a beak, OK?) Another way of saying that is that "empty" space isn't really empty. Since energy and mass are equivalent, what the Uncertainty Principle says is that in "empty" space, particles and photons are constantly coming into and going out of existence.
