Jim, Re: "Even if yields were low on Willamette because of large die size etc. it's just another example of AMDs inability to capitalize on Intels problems. Two years ago, starting with Rambus, Intel was ripe for the taking. AMD had the chip. They pussyfooted around for a year before they even gained any share. Then they delayed. Intel worked through their problems and now with Northwood, AMD is in the same position they were when the K6-2 was having to compete with the Pentium II-III. Well, maybe they are in a little better position. AMD didn't learn the Mhz sells (TM McMannis) until it was too late. Jerry had the whole company believing that somehow everyone would know what IPC mean't and how great the Athlon was. Well, everything worked OK until AMD lost the Mhz lead and the Palomino delay debacle came about. Intel stuffed all the boxes with Willametes and "got to Northwood". Intel is breathing a big sigh of relief. AMD seems to be content to be second fiddle again."

Very good description, Jim. I take it you're not expecting much from AMD's SOI and Hammer?

Good historical post, but in defense of AMD, again, this stuff ain't easy. At least they're second best in IA32, and whither NSM, Cyrix, IDT, Rise, Transmeta, etc., etc.?

Jim I agree with all your points except one. Even if they had hit all their targets they may have sold an extra million or two of Athlons. So market share wise they wouldn't be any better off but ASP wise they would have and at this point in time they may have had an extra billion or so in the bank.
