I realize that being an elitist is offensive to some, but that's the way it is.

In the free world, if something is worth having done, then someone ought to be willing to pay for it.

National security is a different question, of course.

Of course it is. For that, we'll send 10% of our mostly unelite kids, disregarding all the freedom arguments and putting their lives at risk by mandate and ask nothing of the rest, especially if their parents have merited such exemption.

Since my suggested policy permits individuals to opt out, why is any other exemption necessary?

Paying plenty of money and love/attention to aid one's children is certainly defensible, but to free them from the tedium of associating with riff-raff evermore - after they've become adults - is not something I'd consider as a gift.

I don't know that you post is elitist, it sounds more selfish.

There's what's good for the individual and what's good for the whole. They are not mutually exclusive.

Without a sense of community and a willingness to make some sacrifices in a nation, then a nation becomes weak and is probably doomed to failure, because if people always just thought of themselves, then we all would be in trouble, IMO.
There would be a lot of things that wouldn't get done or even be considered because no one would want to do anything that even hinted of being anything but self serving, on the immediate level.

National service is a touchy subject, and IMO there are good reasons for it, and good reasons against it.
