Breaking even is a victory? Isn't that a lot like Saddam Hussein saying, "Yea, Iraq won the Gulf War because America didn't kill me"?

No. Saddam Hussein lost "market share" (Kuwait) and had a loss for the year (smaller army, loss of national income, sanctions, destruction of some of his non-conventional weapons program). He didn't break even or gain market share.

Tench- Breaking even is a victory?

I dunno, did you read the whole message? Breaking even is not a victory (note: AMD will make a small profit). However, we are talking about gaining market share, while simultaneously making a small profit, in the worst recession ever for the semiconductor industry. That's not too bad.

2001 was the perfect opportunity for mighty Intel to crush AMD. And what did INTC accomplish? Nada. AMD is coming through 2001 in solid financial shape with a very solid product plan going forward. Intel blew it, in historic fashion.
