Wharfy....I had the same problem with Verizon...too much "leakage" on an old line to my house. ATT acquired Cablevision but can't drive data through the TV cable line and they are a year away from stringing any new cable in my town. This leads to a satellite dish for internet feeds. You have to have a clear southern exposure...my neighbor has a huge maple that is in the way....the folks from Hughes are seeing if it is a show stopper. I wonder if my neighbor would notice a 100 year old maple missing?

Right now I have a bunch of strangers running thru my backyard stringing fiberoptics
for Pac Bell up to Eureka.

That's a coincidence.
The same thing just happened to me just before we left for vacation.
I came home one evening and saw a Ditch Witch tractor carving up
my front lawn after wondering for about a week what the orange
spray paint on the grass meant.

They never asked for permission or anything like that.
No letter in the mail.
No 50 cents per foot.
Just a tractor and three helpers with shovels parked out front for a few
days.
When the dudes out front told me that they were installing fiber optic
cable for Optimum Online (Cablevision), I didn't complain at all.
I even offered to lend them a hand diggin'... <jus' kiddin'>
We did call just to make sure that they were planning on putting down
sod or grass seed.

When we returned from vacation we got a letter telling us that the fat pipe
was now open and ready for us to abuse it.
We said, "Where do we sign?"
We called 'em up and hopefully will be connected in a few weeks.

I had toyed with the idea of getting the satellite dish for internet but Dish
Network was still asking for quite a bit of money for the equipment and
installation in addition to the pretty high somethin' per month access fee.

Glad I waited.

I can't wait for them to send me the equipment and get me started.
From what I heard, cable is faster than DSL.
Does anyone know whether or not that is true?
I may see if Cablevision can run a line to my office in the Bronx, too.
It would be cool if I could set up a server there and access it from home
or where ever.

Dalin, do you know if that can be done easily enough?

Clappy with a cable modem...
I wonder if the next phase of the internet revolution is about to begin?

I bet they are working hard on setting up some form of digital rights
management.
