I didn't ever say theater defenses were *futile*... I just doubt that in the near term they will all be cost effective vs. the alternatives... or vs. the likely counter measures.

And as to 'those in responsible positions knowing what they are doing' I'll stick with the Kissinger credo: "trust, but verify".

In other words: I'll believe it when I see it.

After all, wasn't Nixon one of 'those in responsible positions'? Wasn't Clinton? Carter? Ford? etc. Were the Reagan/Bush Iraq decisions brilliant strategy?

Do you implicitly trust anyone who ever gets elected (even if they were lifetime "C" students :) ?
