But then, even if that oil was drilled today it would still be 10 to 12 years before it reached the market. By the way, I am FOR drilling in the ANWAR... but on one condition... call it a 'truth test': I only support current drilling if they build the pipeline through Canada down to the American midwest (which is the most energy short region of the country, and also the terminus of the greatest pipeline routes. You may not know it, but Canada has offered to give us the right-of-way for FREE for that pipeline (just as they did when the Alaskan pipeline routes were first under discussion in the early seventies). In the seventies though, the oil companies lied to the American public and Congress. They opposed the free right-of-way through Canada (to the most logical midwestern terminals), and claimed that a pipeline through to a marine port at Valdez Alaska would "get the oil to the American public faster" (estimates were that the more economicly logical Canadian route might take one year longer to build... though Canada disputed that). Actually the plan was to get the oil on tankers -- from which it could be shipped anywhere in the world, and sold to the top bidder... thus maximizing the oil companies' profits but at the expense of "American national energy security". In fact, for many years most of the oil was shipped to Japan, not US west coast refineries. They are at it again, trying to obfuscate the issues and pull the wool over the public's eyes. Canada has again offered a free right-of-way to the midwest (where the oil is needed). If the oil companies (and Congress) take them up on that than I am FOR ANWAR development, because it would enhance American energy security and help protect us from sudden price shifts and economic dislocation. If the oil companies (and the Administration) push for a marine terminal pipeline termination (and I sure haven't heard any public talk about the Canadian route from them... they are acting like a dead seal crawled into the room), then I support the drilling - in the interests of America. If they don't... then they are out to screw the American public again, and I oppose current drilling in the wilderness. After all, undrilled oil is 'oil in the bank' - it's not a wasting asset. We can always drill it tomorrow when we'll need it even more.
