For all of Buchanan's faults, and he has many, IMO, the "alternative theory" of USA Foreign policy history that he reviews in his book, "A Republic, not an empire", is well worth looking at, IMO.

The view that the Spanish-American war turned us into an empire, and that WWII would not have happened if we had stayed out of WWI, has a lot of merit.
