they can't sell it until they are 55. Or can they?
It's a policy set up by the company. Most companies have a choice of mutual funds, interest bearing money market, or company stock. The employee can move their 401K money between the choices. Enron had the most restrictive of policies that I had heard about.

Ashcroft did receive $50,000 in campaign contributions from Enron CEO Kenneth Lay and Enron just over a year ago for his unsuccessful U.S. Senate race here in Missouri.
