Intel has one more year to sort out Itanic, and the whole Itanic strategy is taking on water fairly fast...

At the AMD tech webcast a couple of months ago, near the end, an analyst asked Jerry what was next, what's highest priority, etc., and he yelled out Hammer, Hammer, Hammer. He mentioned nothing else. That was it. I repeat, Hammer is essential to the survival of AMD as we know it, this year-next year. Itanium, on the other hand, is not absolutely essential to the immediate future of Intel. Hammer: heart and soul. Itanium: not just a nice to have, but Intel doesn't die without it. It's a matter of overwhelmingly important products to a company. Hammer is, Itanium isn't.

Dan, Re: "The PC market is ripe for the move to 64-bits."

I wouldn't be so sure. More people are wondering, "Why do I need this new 2GHz CPU," rather than, "How can I make the most use out of another 32-bits." No programmer is going to want to waste development time on dead-end AMD architecture, either, when they plenty of other high volume ways to build in features. x86-64 will be the same as 3DNow!, which later turned out to be 3DNever!.

Control of its own destiny ?

Tyan claims 3Com to blame for dual AMD problem

Plot thickens somewhat
By Mike Magee, 10/01/2002 10:50:03 BST

MOBO MAKER Tyan has posted us a letter claiming 3Com, and not it, is at fault after users experienced problems with its dual Athlon board.
(See Tyan to blame for AMD dual problems)

Well, all we can say is that we have an email from 3Com which claims Tyan is at fault, and not it...

While the Tyan claims are somewhat backed up by the fact that in the letter, the firm has given us an FTP address from which to download drivers for the 3Com devices that appear to be causing the problem.

They've asked us to keep the password and the rest confidential, although quite why they haven't made the beta driver more widely available escapes us totally.

And Tyan should remember our original story on the problem, which related to hardware instabilities which happened at boot up, and which no driver in the world would cure.

Our original correspondent said when the machine boots up, frequently the BIOS detects only one Athlon MP processor and that at 1900+ instead of the two 1800+ that are in the board.

Sooner or later, he added, the machine will freeze, quite often before the OS boots - so this is a BIOS or hardware problem. Freezing also happens when the 3C996 is plugged in and not used by any driver and more particularly if it's plugged into the last PCI slot by the AGP slot.

He adds that he's left with several useless 3C996 cards and is still waiting for a reply that isn't an auto reply from Tyan.

Anyway, this is what Tyan had to say today:

"Dear Sir,

"It has come to my attention that your website has recently posted a couple of articles about our S2462 motherboard.

"It seems that there may be some misinformation presented here. You or your customer is welcome to download the beta drivers that 3Com presented to us more than 4 months ago. These drivers resolve the issue of the 3C996 & the dual AMD platform. You can download them from this location. Please do not post the user name or password on your website. "

Perhaps readers still waiting for Tyan to respond to their enquiries might like to try emailing the company again. We don't have a dual Athlon board so it's of no interest to us personally. µ
