By Alan Patterson

Hong Kong, Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- China will overtake Japan next year as Asia's largest market for personal computers, reflecting economic growth in the most populous nation, according to market researcher International Data Corp.

China is on track for sales of 13.2 million PCs in 2003, compared with an estimated 12.7 million units in Japan, IDC analyst Kitty Fok said, confirming an earlier Reuters report.

``We are expecting China PC market will overtake Japan by 2003,'' said Fok. ``The Japan market will contract this year.''

Further growth is good news for companies such as Legend Holdings Ltd., China's largest PC maker, which posted a 56 percent increase in sales this year even as the market in the rest of the world contracted for the first time since 1985.
