Sharp to boost spending on LCDs

OSAKA, Japan (Reuters) - Sharp Corp, Japan's top maker of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), said on Wednesday it expected to boost capital spending on LCDs by nearly six percent in the next business year to 54 billion yen ($406 million).

The announcement comes as many Japanese electronics makers face losses on display operations amid harsh price competition from Korean and Taiwanese rivals in the market for notebook computer screens.

Sharp's display division has remained in the black, in part by focusing on higher-margin products such as flat-panel TVs and mobile phone displays.

Sharp President Katsuhiko Machida told a news conference the consumer electronics and components company would keep its overall capital spending in the year starting on April 1 roughly unchanged from the current year at 130 billion yen.

He added that Sharp, also a major producer of flash memory chips used in cell phones and consumer electronics, would cut capital spending on semiconductors by nearly one-fourth in 2002/03 to 22 billion yen.
