Peter,
>>How well does AMD's transition to 0.13 micron go? Will >>AMD have less difficulties than Intel?
Who knows?
>>When and in which quantities will the mobile TBred appear >>on the market?
Once they start coming out they will be sufficient to take a big chunk of market share from Intel.
>>How well will TBred scale? Will AMD have an answer to the >>forthcoming 533 MHz NW?
I say it will come out at 1.7Ghz and top out at 2.2Ghz. The EV6 bus theoretically can go to 200Mhz FSB.
>>When will SOI mass production start? How much performance >>improvement will it give to TBred?
That will be what will push the TBred to 2.4Ghz+
>>Is there any chance of ever getting a better share in >>the ??corporate market?
Yes, the MPs are slowing creeping in there. I say by end of year we'll see boxes by OEMS ( if hammer is looming the OEMS will want to start early, if not, it won't happen ).
>>And of course the "Mother of all Questions": When will >>Hammer be launched?
???????
>>Finally: Will Microsoft support X86-64?
Yes, it's already in the headers. We need visual studio to support it and Borland's tools have to also.
>>Oh, and I almost forgot: When will flash finally recover?
Dram already is, so flash should be next

**excellent post** For now, I'll get worried if I see any NW 2.2 systems in my Best Buy flyer or in the ComputorEdge (small shops) flyer. AMD can't afford to be more than 1 quarter behind Intel on 0.13, or Q2 will be bad. /Petz

Peter, re: "and there is still the "wildcard" of SMT for the desktop processor family"

While SMT seems like a great innovation based on the results posted to date the real question will be how Microsoft's OS decide to deal with SMT. If it requires a dual-processor OS then this feature will only be available to a small, but perhaps growing segment of the systems sold.

-PT, written under W2K and still waiting for an Athlon MP motherboard roundup though the low-end Tyan 760MP is looking interesting at less than $200 <g>
ps: Great post. Thank you. The launch of new processors by AMD and Intel is very interesting price wise as it seems both are trying to recover some of the high prices for the fastest speeds seen before the strong price competition of the past year. And at the same time the speed range from slowest to fastest is becoming much greater (percentage wise) while prices on the low-end remain very low.
