Some people really have nothing better to do with their time. Maybe the Cowboys should also change their name because of their treatment of cattle. What about the Buccaneers? Weren't they ruthless pirates? Hey, how 'bout changing the Yankees? Isn't the name offensive to the South?

Maybe we should nickname all sports teams PANSIES and have them wear lovely pink uniforms and encourage players to shake hands after scratching their groin. I'm sure today's flower children won't find any objection.

Resolution asks Redskins to change nickname

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Regional elected officials threw their backing behind a resolution urging Washington's NFL team to abandon the name "Redskins" as racist and "morally unacceptable."

The team said it has no plans to change the name.

Carol Schwartz, a member of the District of Columbia Council, urged team owner Dan Snyder to follow the lead of Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollen, who in 1997 abandoned the name "Bullets" for his NBA franchise, in part because of local gun-related violence.

Redskins senior vice president Karl Swanson expressed frustration that the officials failed to consult Snyder or his staff before voting on the resolution.

Swanson referred to a letter he sent to Schwartz following a similar vote by the D.C. Council in November, in which he said the name "Redskins" symbolizes "courage, dignity and leadership."

"We do not sanction fanciful mascots or caricature-type logos."

The resolutions outlined a history of the word, which they said was used to dehumanize Native Americans by bounty hunters who collected scalps for payment, as though they were animal hides.

The NFL franchise became the Redskins in 1933 when the team moved to Boston's Fenway Park. The team has been based in Washington since 1937.
