DJIA is only 30 stocks chosen more or less at random... Even the SPX isn't the US economy as it doesn't cover small and mid-cap companies and private companies/proprietors don't show up in stock indices. Besides profits of all firms are just a small part of GDP. But if you want to look at stock prices then take some weighted average of the NYSE index and the NAS composite or the Russell....
