1997 Gil Amelio announces another complete revamp of Apple's OS dubbed Son of Copeland.

1998 Steve Job of Next forges a strategic alliance with Linus Torvolds for a port of the Next OS to Linux giving the hot new OS a snazzy GUI.

1998 Gil Amelio announces the all-in-one NetMac, a square, beige unit that looks like the original Macintosh on steroids. the box is ready for Son of copeland which is still in the debuggin stage. Sales are up slightly as die-hard Mac fans snap up the units in order to be SOC-ready, but interest quickly subsides.

1999 E-machines vows to create Next/Linux boxes in 5 fruity colors. the machines come dual-booted with Next/Linux and BeOS. Users also learn, they can run Windows 96 which was delayed since microsoft's attention had been focused on their Department of Justice trial for being the a monopoly. Apples rapid decline under Amelio has reduced market share to a point, that the jury hammers Bill Gates for unfair use of monopoly.

2000 Microsoft split 3 ways. software arm teams with Emachines to add Windows 99 to their colorful line of tr-boot machines. Apple beleagured with financial woes stops producing hardware and focuses on a line of colorful mouse-pads.

2001 The tech industry hit hard by economic crises of dot com fallout. Apple falls back to niche business of customizing existing Mac models. Users love their old Macs and Apple offers inexpensive upgrades. The Mac Plus with USB, Firewire, wireless internet connectivity and a 10 inch LCD panel becomes a big hit! Third party vendors offer colorful transluscent chassis.
