What areas exist where homes are expensive but rents are not also proportionately expensive? Not familiar with any and don't see how that can occur.

Also, the rent vs. buy decision doesn't generally apply to a single person with a low tax bracket, anyway. Such a person probably couldn't afford to buy much housing in my area. I maintain that a person who can afford to buy and is in a position to hold for longer than three years and certainly more than five years is far better off owning.

When the decision seems hard to make, a person should consult a tax advisor or financial advisor and cost everything out. Unless one is very savvy, these professionals might be able to point out some aspects of owning vs. renting which are not readily apparent.
