Turkey, via the Ottoman Empire's al-Ajyad Castle, built in 1781, naturally does not want the castle destroyed to make way for a hotel. Monuments, like churches, mosques, statues, and the like are the unwritten historical record and as such are proof of claims to territory lost by war or revolution. The Saudi Royal Family as you no doubt know, attacked the Ottoman Turks capturing Mecca and Medina and the whole Lawrence of Arabia epic depicts the British Secret Service and Foreign Office funding the war against the Ottoman Empire, the Saudi Royal Family won, lost, won and lost and then re-won the Saudi Arabian Penisula.

The Wahabbi (excuse spelling) sect of Islam then "Blessed" the House of Saud as the rightful rulers and protectors of Islam. This is another reason why The Saudi Royal Family (All 30,000 of them) should move to a British form of Parlimentary Monarchy. The Radicals on the one hand, like bin laden and Al Quaida seek to destroy the Saudi Royal Family in order to create a cleric run Islamic Republic like Iram and Sudan and formerly Taliban (Talib Afghanistan), among other regressed islamic nations. On the Other hand, you have the Saddam Husseins and even various interest groups in countries even as Modern as Turkey say nothing of Iran that would like to dominate the Saudi Arabian Penisula and grab the Oil there. Destroy the Royal Family, The House of Saud, they reason is all they need to do. That is, eliminate 30,000 House of Saud members from power, instead of waging war against the whole nation of several millions, which is what they would have to do, if, Saudi Arabia moved to a more secular Parlimentary Monarchy like Britain.

Even if the Queen is killed, England will still survive as England, even so if the Prime Minister is removed, for that is the nature of the structure of a democracy, it is a nation built on institutions instead of a nation dependent on a single Royal Household. Household Dynasty systems come and go, nation states endure much longer, and that is why the fundamentalist extremists are striking now, while it is EASIER to get their objective, the Reins of Absolute Governmental Power over an entire nation or region.

I also agree that historical artifacts are the common property of the entire world, our world is really one large culture of many sub-cultures. Destruction is not the answer. Peaceful co-existence and mutual respect, someday maybe even neighborly love, that is the future. The alternative is Armageddon. If it is Armageddon, sooner is better than later.
I am,
Truly yours,
