If Intel is able to maintain such a lead by 2005 when they launch their 65nm process, it will give them a significant advantage over other processes. More likely, though, both Intel and others will continue to improve their processes between now and then. However, I think it's significant, since Intel is already trying to garner support for fully depleted SOI, while IBM and AMD are still content to use the partially depleted stuff. At least, that's what they say in public - behind closed doors, IBM may be scrambling for a fully depleted solution. AMD is no doubt hoping that IBM or Motorola will simply have the answers, and then they can license whatever they come up with.
