QChat on the Handset is a BREW Application

The QChat client requires a BREW-enabled handset and also requires 3G CDMA technology. This means that QChat services will be delivered on products from a wide variety of CDMA equipment vendors.

QChat is written as a BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) application and will only be deployed on BREW phones. QChat users will also have the ability to access BREW-enabled applications as offered by their carrier. Users will have access to both QChat and BREW-enabled data applications as the BREW platform manages the intersection of data and telephony features on a mobile handset.

QChat Users

QChat's features provide a complete push-to-talk system that equips users with an easy to use virtually instantaneous communications functionality.

Now....

How does this mesh with Sprint's Esrey talking about PCS using "Push to Talk", as Slacker noted earlier?

"..Esrey just gave a timeframe of three to four months after the launch of 1x....launch will be with a number of handsets. He hopes to have it incorporated in all of the models but still needs to talk to handset manufacturers about the possability.."

Must PCS do BREW for its "Push to Talk"?

Can Sprint develop an option... a non-Q JAVA option?

Is there proprietary IP involved that would inhibit such options? The QChat PR comes on the heels of the Q/MOT/NXTL deal.

Confusing...

If QChat and BREW are tied at the hip, as it appears, BREW's prospects may be dramatically elevated...

I guess we weren't the only ones confused with the QCOM/NXTL/MOT QChat press release...
