I think you are right: the mainstream software appears to cost about the same for Apple and PCs, so it is really more a question of availability. I was basing my statement on games, which are probably not representative of the "normal" market.

As an aside, I was looking at some material from the Consumer Electronics Show. Maxtor showed a 160 GB external firewire harddrive for $399. That'd get my $400 bucks over an iPod any day, although it doesn't play music nor fit in my pocket. :)
