Singapore shares open higher with small techs in focus

sg.news.yahoo.com

SINGAPORE, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Singapore shares rose slightly at the start on Friday, building on momentum from Thursday's gains, with small China-related technology firms climbing fastest and dominating volumes.

At 0130 GMT, the bellwether Straits Times Index was up 0.19 percent or 3.23 points at 1,709.87. Gainers beat losers 94 to 51 in brisk volume of 122 million shares.

Singapore shares are on course to notch up their second successive weekly gains in 2002 on the back of liquidity-driven buying by funds and rising retail participation. The STI has gained 5.3 percent in 2002.

On Friday, systems integrator Frontline Technologies was up one cent at S$0.30 and led volumes with 7.9 million shares changing hands.

Computer peripheral maker Surface Mount Technology too rose one cent to S$0.50 and was the second heaviest traded with six million shares changing hands.

Among large caps, Singapore Press Holdings was up 1.26 percent at S$24.10.

Property stocks continued from where they left off on Thursday, with the sector index up 1.52 percent. City Developments climbed 2.27 percent to S$6.75 after rising 4.7 percent on Thursday.
