Hynix-Micron Reports Hurt Sentiment

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan shares ended 3.1% lower Friday with a strong selloff in dynamic random access memory issues and profit-taking after the market's recent gains.

The recent rally in DRAM shares came to an abrupt end mid-session, as investors realized that a quick deal between Micron Technology and Hynix Semiconductor was unlikely.

The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange closed down 183.69 points, or 3.1%, to 5687.59. Decliners outnumbered gainers 409 to 211 with 61 issues unchanged in trading worth NT$195.8 billion (US$1=NT$35.016).

The possible merger between Micron of the U.S. and South Korea's Hynix seemed to hit a snag Friday, as Micron Technology is believed to want half of Hynix Semiconductor's multibillion dollar debt written off, according to the Financial Times Web site.

Surges of DRAM stocks helped propel the Taipei bourse to close at a nine-month closing high Thursday.

The losses in DRAM issues Friday triggered profit-taking on the big board, as investors were concerned the key index's some 70% rise since September's lows might not be warranted by economic fundamentals, said analysts.

Among active shares, DRAM makers Winbond Electronics Corp. lost NT$2 to close at NT$27.50, while Mosel Vitelic. Inc. tumbled NT$1.50 to close at NT$20.10. Both were down by the daily downside limit of 7%.
