Crown Cork to close Lakeville plant for 7 months

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Crown Cork & Seal Company Inc.
plans to temporarily shut its Lakeville plant, idling
approximately 80 workers for at least seven months.

The company sent a layoff notification letter to state officials
on Wednesday, said Gail Butenhoff, an administrator for the
Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development.

The letter said Crown plans to halt aluminum can assembly in
Lakeville sometime around March 17. The plant may reopen
in October, it said.

Crown Cork & Seal makes aluminum beverage cans in
Lakeville. It produces aerosol cans at a plant in Faribault.

No layoffs or shutdowns are planned for the plant in Faribault,
said Jim Deaver, the Philadelphia-based company's director of
industrial relations.
