Cree shares dropped to trade at $27.50 on the Instinet electronic system having closed at $30.65 on Thursday ahead of the release of the results.

In other activity, shares of Rational Software Corp. (Nasdaq:RATL - news) moved higher after company officials said late on Thursday the firm was comfortable with its estimates for full year 2002 earnings and signaled its business had stabilized in the current quarter. Shares rose to $22.70 pre-open vs. a close of $22.17.
