You are right on Gordon........we are our own best health care advocates. Thank God your wife was OK....if that had been a cancer then it would have been tragic. For every person who was lucky, like your wife, there is one that was not as fortunate.

Our HMO's are businesses and they don't have our best interests at heart. I hate it when I think that my health issues are being decided by a businessman who sits in his office and juggles numbers.

I have learned what their "hot button" issues are and I ring them when I feel I need to be seen or treated. I also ask questions and get the opinions of others out of the HMO. If you face a Dr. with an ethical decision he is obligated by the Hypocratic ( sp?) oath to do what is in your best interest.

I use questions like, " If I was your wife, what would you recommend." That is how I got my Stanford radiation oncologist who is world renowned in his field. My HMO physician referred me. I know there are some restrictions, but push it to the limits.........afterall, it's your life!

I can't believe how lucky you and your wife are!!
