My recollection is that Microsoft entered into a "co-development and marketing" effort with Sybase with SQL Server circa 1992, which expired after two years. After which Microsoft would be able to renew that agreement or not, at its option, but in either case it would own the source code, too. Of course it chose not to renew that agreement, and Sybase has been crippled ever since.

It's nice to see Sybase's announcement this week that they would roll out a server product for Mac OS X. This might get them a very nice little niche as the only enterprise database server product available for this platform, and they might get some nice business from it. Unless Oracle finally gets off its butt and does the same, that is.
