Stribe, Re: "Out of curiousity, what are you using as a basis for that statement? I am looking at pricewatch.com as we speak - Intel Pentium 4 2.2 Ghz Socket 478 has listings at 17 stores (2 pages). By contrast, AMD Athlon 2000 XP has listings at 22 stores (also 2 pages). More or less a dead heat.

As for XP 1900+, it has 60 store listings - 5 pages. (As a comparison to it, Intel's 2 ghz 478 socket offering which has 63 listings, 6 pages)."

I don't know why so many people want to look at Pricewatch in order to compare processor volumes. Many of those stores don't deal in terribly large volumes. Let's assume that the top 2 stores for the Athlon XP 2000+ sell in excess of 10,000 units per month, the next 6 stores sell in excess of 5,000, and the other 14 only sell in excess of 1,000. In order to satisfy the requirements of all these stores, AMD need only provide 64,000 units. Over the course of the quarter, this is only 192,000 units. Of course, these numbers mean nothing, since I made them up, but my point is that stores on Pricewatch individually don't deal in large volumes. Therefore, you cannot assume that there are a lot of volumes just by looking at how many stores are carrying them online.

On the other hand, 2.2GHz Northwood chips are appearing in large MNC OEMs like Dell, Compaq, and Gateway. These OEMs each easily sell units by the millions every quarter. For AMD, Compaq seems to be selling units with the latest Athlon XP, but I haven't seen very many others. I would think that this makes a much bigger difference in terms of availability.

stribe30 “Intel Pentium 4 2.2 Ghz Socket 478 has listings at 17 stores (2 pages).” Thanks for pointing out that the Pentium 4 is widely available. You might let McGee know so he can try to keep his facts straight.

Thanks again.
