Face recognition firm Viisage buys LAU Security

NEW YORK, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Face recognition technology firm, Viisage Technology Inc. (NasdaqNM:VISG - news) on Friday said it acquired rival LAU Security Systems, extending its reach into the federal government sector.

Under the deal, Viisage -- one of the hot prospects in the market for security identification systems -- said it will pay LAU a royalty of 3.1 percent of its facial recognition revenues over the next 12.5 years, up to a maximum of $27.5 million and assume certain liabilities related to theacquired business.

LAU Security was formed in 1997 to develop facial recognition products for the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal government customers.

``In one grand stroke we can add to our revenues, expand our channels of distribution into the important federal government markets, leverage the highly regarded LAU brand, and obtain a highly trained quality technical work force, while preserving cash and without diluting our stock.'' Tom Colatosti, Viisage president and chief executive said in a statement on Friday.

Shares of Viisage closed at $7.68 on the Nasdaq on Thursday, off their year high of $16.80.
