There are no cheaper alternatives in the RISC market, unless you are trying to compare Itanium to x86 chips. If Compaq and Dell and IBM and HP and others are building high end solutions with Itanium (and they are!), then there is no comparison with the latter.

70% performance advantage on McKinley ought to make it faster than all the other RISC competition, too, except for EV7 and Power4, both of which cost leagues more than McKinley will.
