The 160 GB external drive is a fine peripheral. So are a new LCD display and a comfortable chair. But what has that got to do with the iPod?

Sorry, I wasn't linear enough. I compare the two because, to me, the redeeming quality of the iPod over a cheap 64MB MP3 player is the side-benefit of using it as a HD. At least that helps justify the massive premium (as well as the firewire, since once you've downloaded the bulk of your music, the incremental changes don't need firewire).

As I have mentioned time and time again, there are very few times when one is away from a fixed MP3 player, such as your desktop computer or your laptop computer. During those computer-free music-possible times, a small MP3 player would be more than sufficient to fill the musical gap. (and, I have one friend who bought one of the original 32MB Rios, and he's still happy with it for exactly that reason) Sure, it would be nice to rarely have to sync your MP3 with new music ('cause you are going to get tired of the same music on the cheaper one eventually and rotate), but other than that, the iPod is just a supremely expensive MP3 player.

So the logic is that for the cost of an iPod and maybe $40, I could buy a "normal" MP3 player plus an external firewire HD, and receive all the benefits of the iPod plus 32X more storage space, and equal the coolness factor (because, hell, 160GB HD is pretty cool). This isn't meant to be a good argument, just an observation that an iPod costs as much as this new HD!
