OT ++TIDES+++

As a windsurfer, we discuss tides a great deal since when they go against you, it makes windsurfing very difficult... It is nice to have he tides help keep you upwind so you aren't "sailing uphill" all day.

This site covers it well: linden-software.com

The effects like Tide amplification are really important as they allow me to sail in the South Bay which gives us enough water to sail safely over areas that are mud flats at zero tide.

Also, at the end:
1. As every school physics student knows, teachers claim that centrifugal force does not really exist! Like most hand-waving explanations this simple description of the tides conceals a torrent of mathematics. For further information consult the classic reference: Admiralty Manual of Tides, HMSO London 1941, Doodson AT and Warburg HD.

This one has a nice picture of the tidal bulge due to gravity.
