"Is it 54 mbs, or is it 5.4 mbs...."

It is 54 mbits/sec. That is what the standard calls for. Of course, the range is really short at that performance level, but it can exceed 802.11b's range when both are at 11mbits/sec.

However, 802.11a is attenuated more by walls and ceilings. Radio is fraught with tradeoffs...

Dave - Re: "Is it 54 mbs, or is it 5.4 mbs.... "

The data transfer rate is 54 MegaBits/sec.

The CARRIER FREQUENCY is 5.2 GHz.

These are 802.11a standards.

Note - a few companies are already "pushing" the standard with 100 MegaBits/sec transfer rate.
