I was thinking of the 100 plus Ryukyu islands; also, the Bonin islands of about the same number. Apparently, the Bonin were given back about a quarter century later, and the Ryukyu given back in 1972.

The big loser in the Okinawan horror were the Okinawans who were caught in the middle during the war and lost 150,000 people. Even after 1972, the US military presence there consumes and jeopardises most of the island.

But the free world requires a defence so I support that as long as it is needed, although I think the Okinawans ought to be compensated. To be fair, I have not researched the issue, so compensation has perhaps been given.

The Russians have never returned the Kuril islands, and that sore continues to foment even 55 years later. It is good that the United States returned all the land. It says a lot for their integrity.
