You think US will make public Pakistan's role in 911?

dailynews.yahoo.com

Much of Musharraf's lengthy speech was devoted to a denunciation of Islamic extremism in Pakistan, which developed rapidly in this country since the 1980s and which opposed the government's decision to back the United States in the war against terrorism.

Musharraf said Pakistanis were ``fed up'' with religious extremism and wanted to build a society of mutual respect and tolerance. He declared that if extremist clerics will not ``show any responsibility, we will stop them.''

It is ironic that Secretary Powell continues to urge being gentle with Syria, Saddam and the Arabs generally, since he remains the butt of their scorn and anti-American bravado (see my "Welcome to Fatah-land, Secretary Powell"). "There is no difference between Powell and Albright," stated the Egyptian government-run Al Ahram, "except for height and color. Albright was a Czech, and Powell is a Negro" (March 03). An editor at the official paper, Al Akhbar wrote, "with Powell, our mornings have become black, and our nights, pitch black." How´s that for racial sensitivity? Any comment, Senator Rodham, Mr. Push-Excel Jackson?

Al Akhbar also stated, "we don´t understand how Colin Powell can be the third most important man in the US. His stupidity and ignorance of diplomacy makes the US a joke! "We Arabs must restore this man´s wisdom, and awaken him from his slumber and teach him a lesson" (March 11).

That´s the mild stuff. Opposition media in Egypt, principal among the "moderate Arab states" of which the Anglo-American coalition is supposed to exist, are more blunt. "Powell and his masters must know we have grown tired of American arrogance. Washington is the greatest devil in the world… They destroyed Iraq, and the American wolf is still thirsty for Arab blood. They are murderers who isolate us. Are we afraid of Jihad?" Egypt gets more than two billion a year, mostly in military aid, including a new generation of Apache helicopters, just announced. Here´s more of what this buys.

"O Mr. Powell, you Americans are cheaters and liars. You are our true enemies. This is how every Arab, every Muslim feels. The roar of our people curses you and promises to pay you what you deserve. Palestine is Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. We will beat you and turn your lives into hell. We are the same people who forced you to withdraw from Vietnam and Somalia…" (Al Usbu March 12. See memri.org, special dispatch #195).
