You will have to explain that for the scientifically illiterate among us like me. Fact is, our government has not taken many drastic security steps. And the measures decided so far already soaked up the budget surplus. Politicians will care more about re-election in the next few years than creating a perfect security state at any cost.

(And the government did not resort to extremist measures advocated by some on other SI threads, like what I fondly call the "High Intolerance and Stupidity" Rambo groupies).

As 9/11 fades and no new incidents appear to refresh the threat, economically burdensome security measures will be harder and harder to justify and implement.

Americans like prosperity, pure and simple. We tolerate various threats to enjoy that prosperity (traffic deaths, etc.). Another six months with no major attacks and I don't think terrorism will be much different at all.
