"The most interesting introduction is the 1.6MHz MP Pentium 4 with 1Mb of cache and with an enormous channel rebate."

Now let me get this straight. Intel has got to pay OEMs to take their spiffy new server processor? Now who's troubles are getting worse? I mean, if they had such a lock on the market, why the rebate? Unless they are afraid that there is some competition now.

<Intel told us that it was making Pentium 4s with 512K cache even for lower chip speeds, for certain manufacturers. It is also, obviously, doing so for the channel too.>

Sounds very much like a bin-split problem on the NW chips. Why would Intel want to sell some of their 0.13 production at $200 per chip instead of $650? (2200 MHz)

The reason, of course, is that a significant number of the chips that "work" only do so at lower speeds.

Not a good sign for the 0.13 process if it can't even equal the 0.18 process.

Windsock: AMD's troubles in the server market are going to get WORSE !!

AMD has no presence in the segment of the server market targeted by Prestonia (large L2 cache P4). Zip.

So how can their troubles get worse?

Or are Intel planning on selling these chips at a few hundred bucks a pop? ;-)

If so, I know who that would spell trouble for…
