This is one of the finest selections from Bang e-Dara by Iqbal. It refers to importance of unity and collegiality in nations. In this couplet from Allama Iqbal ‘Fard Qaim Rabte Millat Say Hai Tanha Kuch Naheen. Mauj Hai Darya Main Aur Baroon-e-Darya Kuch Naheen.’
The English translation would be:

“AMONGST THE COMMUNITY INDIVIDUALS do not SURVIVE alone;
LIKE WAVES THAT EXIST IN oceans But OUT OF oceans the waves are nothing”

Iqbal was a poet of 20 century, but in his poetry there is a wholesome fusion of the physical and metaphysical, a mutually inclusive combination of the material and the moral.

His poetry transcends time and space, and it is not easy to draw a line between the earthly and the heavenly thoughts in it. He was a successor in a long line of Persian and Urdu poets of Iran and the sub-continent, culminating in Mirza Asadullah Khan ‘Ghalih’ (1797-1869), who is regarded as the most prolific poet of the 19 century.

He transmigrated literally Ghalib’s soul into his writings. There is spontaneity, variety and diversity in his poetry. And he paid a poignant tribute to Ghalib in his poem ‘Mirza Ghalib’ which appears in this collection. His poems like ‘Himalaya’ (which he wrote in the year 1901), ‘Tarana-e-Hindi’, Naya Shivala’ ‘Shikva’ and ‘Javab-e-Shikva’ are the masterpieces in Urdu poetry.

The reason my name is Iqbal is that my father told me that he wanted me to display some of his attributes, I think sub-consciously I have been affected by his poetry and I like his work a lot.

On the lighter side of this thread history, one of the fiercest battles on Idea thread if you remember was launched when someone ridiculed Iqbal on this thread. It nearly let to the demise of this thread.gg
The above couplet is the new mantra of Pakistan liberal forces.

There is no dearth of intellectual depth and Iqbal provides a lot of ammunition to the liberal forces presently spear headed by our President. He is providing religious and moral justification to a sea change of attitude that my nation has to undergo and I will be honest had it not been 11th of Sept we would still be lost. Talebans Afghanistan debacle has opened a lot of eyes.

Now very intelligently he is borrowing heavily from religious and political ideas that are gaining wide acceptance and his popularity, and no one else but Iqbal poetry and intellect will be the basis of this battle of ideas.
One of the last great things Iqbal did was to establish the Adarah Darul Islam, an institution where studies in classical Islam and contemporary social science would be subsidized.

If you look at my 28th Aug article where I have refereed to closing down of the religious schools teaching extremism I had extensively based my argument on Iqbal’s vision. The necessity of meeting of contemporary thought and sciences with present thinking within Islamic societies is very important.

It was perhaps the last wish of a great man who was fascinated with the yoking of modern science and philosophy to Islam, to create bridges of understanding at the highest intellectual level. This thought he expressed thus:

In the West, Intellect is the source of life,
In the East, Love is the basis of life.
Through Love, Intellect grows acquainted
with Reality,
And Intellect gives stability to the work of
Love,
Arise and lay the foundations of a new world,
By wedding Intellect to Love.

<The extremists will be furious and clashes between police and extremists are likely in certain areas. But the larger question to the world is whether the Pakistan/India confrontation will recede from possibility. The refusal to hand over the List of 20 is likely to be judged harshly by India's leadership. They will say he's all posture and no delivery.>

1. No clashes reported today rather people have liked his speech by and large.

2. I think Pakistan has played its cards well, all 19 hijackers were Saudis or Egyptians or from UAE, since terror is not state policy of any of these states these states were not impacted. In case of talebinsed Afghanistan the policy of attack and destruction was pursued since terror had become a tool of state policy and protection of terrorists had also became as state organ. Once Pakistan has renounced terror as a state tool and have launched on a massive crackdown, I believe that they deserve benefit of time. I suppose that breaking with past and historic announcement of yesterday India has achieved the dual objective of a new beginning and I hope that Mr. Vajpayee will withdraw forces in few weeks.

I see no reason once these extremists’ parties have been disbanded that Indians should go through these open threats of nuclear war. Cornering Pakistan would not serve any purpose now. I think we are breaking from past and some time should be given how things evolve from here. However, Indians have right to take action whatever they think is proper for destroying the network of terrorists, one small point for Indians is to understand the dynamics of the strategy, Indian is no US and neither Pakistan is Afghanistan. After what has happened since 11th of Sept, the global isolation of Pakistan has ended, the entire Muslim world and radical states are watching the crack down in Pakistan with greatest interest. This is beginning of the end of terrorism as a organized bargaining chip from Maghreb to Brunei and India should understand that they should help the process to grow. It is just not Pakistan extremist that are on the run here, the global policy to achieve a consensus of elimination of terrorism has been helped yesterday, a foresight is required here by Indian intellectuals it is far beyond Pakistan it is about removal of the cancer of Islamic radicalism from global polity.

3. Some of these people are Bombay underworld kings like Chota Shakeel and Doud Ibrahim, they are Al Capone of India and this is Indian mafia that as escaped from India, their tentacles in Bombay arte far spread, now Indian wants to cut off the head of this mafia that has lot of scores to settle with lot of Indians. List of 20 had few UBL type characters like Azhar, Hafiz and others and they should be send to jail for their role in terrorism for 20 years, however Indian mafia based on Karachi is a problem that needs a different approach, the Indians should stop paying these guys in Bombay and Delhi the extortion money, the Indians should cuts of thousands of those underworld connections that ha led to creation of a huge crime infested underworld. I am sure that Pakistan will address these issues of gangsters in Karachi once Indians start major crack down on homegrown mafia. Organized crime and cross border terrorism needs to be tackled with different strategies, one requires the speech that President yesterday delivered other required cleansing of the crime infested Bombay from handy man of these petty criminals. To ask Indian crime kings to be handed over to India is asking wrath of these kings like Al Copane against Pakistan. Extremists should be handled; rest of them needs collaboration between Indian and Pakistan Interior Ministries. That needs far bigger co-operation, the removal of organized crime cabal from India.
