Glenn, Is that true in the sense of physical plant such as wiring and switches ? I thought the different competitors are merely resellers of your local company's wiring. I also thought the only difference is the name on the invoice. In my area there are "different" dsl providers, but it seems they all use the same Ameritch wires that have run to the house since it was built. None of them implies they will dig a new trench and run new wire.

Sarmad,
I was not implying there were four options for the wiring. There is just the one as you mentioned. The DNS server or ISP is the option. They of course have varying connections to the internet backbone. In our case they are all paying Verizon to use their lines.

The varying ISPs may have better or worse service depending up on the load on their server an their backbone connection. They are all charging the same for the bandwidth and the server usage.

The cable firms running a new wire are only doing that for those that have an old 75ohm coax cable to their pole or line. That is most people. The cable interent is a certain frequency on the cable lines and a single cable may be shared in the event the cable is in good condition.
