is it safe to upgrade from WinME to XP? I have a 6 month old PC with a very fast CPU, tons of memory

You should have no problem whatsoever.

Below is a pretest to check your computers readiness.

From what I read the next Windows OS is a year or so away and as far as SP1.1 I would guess sometime this summer.
