Windows ME gives messages like that a lot if you try to do stuff that actually requires the computer to work.....it is a system that in my experience cannot walk and chew gum at the same time.

I have found that with Windows ME (and probably Windows 98 which is very similar) one of the best approaches is to close down all of the crap that runs in the background automatically. One frequent culprit on my machine is running the virus protection at the same time as any CD playback or CD burning programs or anything that displays video or photos.
