If wages were at sufficient levels and benefits were adequate the unions would disappear, that is the nature of the free market, and the best run companies operate without unions in many cases. So it boils down to corporate greed and mismanagement, and they should have no mercy from anywhere, let them profit or die. So the strong profitable companies can grow and hire and pay taxes which help strengthen the infrastructure with or without unions.
