Dan, Re: "So, you're claiming that AMD beat Intel to .13 by a year?"

I would expect you to conclude something foolish like this. Keep in mind that Intel started their .13u ramp in May-June, and that Intel's .13u process was a full and complete shrink at that point. I think AMD started needing smaller transistor gates after they launched with 1.2GHz. They weren't at the level you'd find at .13u, but they were shrinking. I think they reached the .13u level with the launch of Athlon XP at up to 1.53GHz. I think that 1.67GHz pushed the process exceptionally far. I wouldn't expect that they could have broken 1.2GHz without smaller transistor gates. If you look at what's coming out of Austin at .18u, such as the Duron, it is still stuck at 1.2GHz. I have been assuming that AMD would get 60% gain from their true .18u process to a true .13u process, much like Intel is expected to get. Thus 1.2GHz*1.6 is about 1.93GHz, which is where I expect Thoroughbred to max out at. SOI will add another 200-300MHz to bring Barton to 2.2GHz. Were you expecting AMD to surpass Intel in frequency, despite having a pipeline half as large?
