RE:"average Intel bigot is that Dell cleans up a lot from the mess either way. Times, they are a-changing"

Carly is desperate. Not much she can do unless it's fix a good golden parachute.
Nothing is changing. When the going gets tough, fat arse pork companies like HP have to render fat. All they make money on is inkjet cartridges anyway.
Dell is fine unless parts prices start to go up. Then their model works against them. It has less to do with "Intel only" than people think.

Tony, they are a bunch of deceiptful arseholes. If they are to kill off Compaq why merge with it in the first place? I'll tell you why. So that the execs from both companies can collect fat commissions ( in the form of bonuses either cash or stock ) from the transaction. I hope that the shareholders can see through the madness.

Tony,

But in an interview Friday, [CEO Carly Fiorina] warned that, should [the merger between HP and CPQ] fail, H-P's vaunted printer and imaging businesses would be damaged and H-P might have to shut down its personal computer division.
......
The obvious conclusion for the average Intel bigot is that Dell cleans up a lot from the mess either way

Wow, that's the most bullish news I've ever seen for an investor in Dell.
