Yes, there are some "rules of war." One of them in our country is that you can be conscripted into military service whether you approve of the war or not. You no doubt remember Muhammed Ali's problem in the Vietnam era. It's a good thing for you that you weren't of draft age during World War II or the Korean conflict. You would have had the choice of serving in the military, or serving in jail. Even if you said you were a "conscientious objector," you still would have had to serve, as a medic for example. You might have even gotten beaten up again, too :-(
