Thanks, Vitas. Not sure what those numbers are; they seem awfully volatile to be GNP/GDP. In general, market data before 1870 and economic data before the civil war are very unreliable. It's very hard to get an accurate picture. I notice they're citing NBER data, which I thought only went back to 1863. This something new at NBER?

FWIW, it looks like that data doesn't support a market that peaked in 1852 and declined until 1857.
