Earlie from Earlie:

Have been more or less on the sidelines since I took some hurts back in the late fall (didn't recognize the train whistle soon enough) and gave back some profits. Redoubled the research field work, just to ensure that the story wasn't changing on me out where it counts. It wasn't, in fact things were deteriorating more rapidly than expected.

Decided to wait until the market provided some indication that this deterioration is being recognized. It has been a long wait.

Tomorrow, we will begin the "earnings season" in earnest and during the day, I will likely take on (short) positions in companies that will be reporting tomorrow night or in the next day or two. As noted earlier, I expect that the conference calls will not be brimming with clear "visibility" and unless company officials really push the fibbing envelope, their comments could be corrosive to after-market stock prices.

These will not be "heavy bets" because I still don't see much "recognition of reality" yet, so more patience may be required. Being patient hasn't always been a strong suit at this end (frequently too "early") but it sure is providing a nice reward in the current market environment. The worry level about the timing of one's re-entry is much diminished when the mad sheep have been so active for so lengthy a period of time. (g)

Best, Earlie
