Lakers,

<< But that doesn't mean you can't use your phone for high speed internet access, esp. when you are using it as a modem. >>

In a follow up to his original post on the Sprint User forum the author (compguy32) responded to this question:

One thing that is not clear, though -- suppose you want to use your phone as a modem (for a laptop). Right now it's 14.4kbps, which makes it fairly useless (for me, at least). Will a 3G voice/2G data phone still be at 14.4k after they turn on the 3G network? In other words, for 144k does one need to wait for "full" 3G phones?

His response:

You will need a full 3G phone in order to get the faster data speeds.

It appears to me the limitation is in the controlling software and if so (assuming this response and the original post are accurate) the phone will need a flash upgrade after it is certified for data and 1x is available on the network.

It will be up to Sprint whether or not they make a flash upgrade available (assuming no firmware changes) to a user that requests one. <<
