Mitsubishi Electric speeds up job cuts

sg.news.yahoo.com

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese electronics conglomerate Mitsubishi Electric Corp said on Tuesday it speeded up a plan to trim 2,000 contract workers from its domestic chip division as it grapples with the semiconductor industry's worst downturn ever.

The job cuts will be completed by the end of this March, a company spokesman said, moving forward a plan announced last September to cut 1,000 jobs in the current business year to March and another 1,000 in the following year.

He added that Mitsubishi Electric's domestic chip operations employed 11,000, including both lifetime workers and contract employees.
